In the modern office environment, co-workers need to respect one anothers' personal space.
This has becoming increasingly difficult in an era where management is more concerned with the bottom line.
Your bosses (or at least their boss's bosses) are trying to get the most out of that square footage, as they should, but that can put a krimp in many employees' sanity.
Many of us have to share an office or even a cubicle, and conducting all of your business two feet away from someone conducting all of their bussiness can be quite nerve-racking.
It's bad enough if you work at some kind of call center.
What about a journalist (like me) who has to promise discretion to a source?
How can a source trust that I'll protect their identity when they hear my cubicle-mate ordering a sandwhich, and realize she's privy to my secrets?
And that's just a regular story.
What about an undercover piece?
Sometimes I have to engage in subterfuge with unsavory characters to get real answers.
And when I am, I don't need a coworker breaking the illusion by bitching about Pokemon.
And I really don't need said coworker accusing me of being one of my brilliant undercover character!
I'm lying to them- figure it out!
Or better yet, just mind your own business.

Let's cut the shit-
I sit four feet away from you and I can hear you ordering hookers.
Do you have to be told that's inappropriate in the workplace?
This isn't about "discretion," you're not speaking to your physician or a confidential source for a story.
You're clearly talking to a pimp named Knuckles.
By the way, and I have no desire to delve into your personal life, BUT, is that really a business transaction you haggle in?
And can you demand a better price when your requests are so specific?
I mean, the moment they carry out your third request, you really will be in a compromised position at their mercy.
I've called you out on this more than once and you treat me like I'm stupid or crazy.
Well, I've had enough.
I'm sure HR is going to have a field day with this complaint, and even if they don't, your wife should enjoy this recording I made of you're last conversation with Knuckles.
